DESIGNER NAME: ZUHAL KUVAN-MILLS
BACKGROUND: Zuhal Kuvan-Mills is a Turkish-born Australian Visual artist, Textile and Organic certified (GOTS) Haute-Couture fashion designer. The Western Australia based creator has two unique eco-sustainability labels to her name – Atelier Zuhal, an artisan studio specialising in handmade textiles using certified organic alpaca and merino fibres, and Green Embassy, a cutting-edge ‘slow fashion’ clothing label employing earth-friendly, hand-crafted techniques.
Kuvan-Mills began her professional career as a Veterinary Surgeon graduate from Istanbul University in 1986. She then worked as an Animal Science and Conservation lecturer in England until 2004. In 2004 she returned to her biggest ambition – Contemporary Art and she studied at the University of Creative Arts in Farnham/Surrey, England. In 2010, she graduated with a Visual Arts Degree from the Curtin University in WA with several awards. Since then, Kuvan-Mills has participated in many group and solo art exhibitions across Australia and Overseas. More recently, as an emerging fashion designer, Kuvan-Mills has showcased at London Fashion Week , Vancouver Fashion Week, Seattle, Beijing, New York Fashion Week, New Zealand Fashion Week, Eco-Fashion Week London and again at Vancouver and Paris at the World Fashion Week Representing Australia. Kuvan-Mills lives on a sprawling bush property Swan Valley in Perth with her husband and two daughters.
THE COLLECTION: SS16 Collection is inspired by Tropical Rainforests as Eco Fashion label Green Embassy ‘s all Collection concept is based on strong ecological issues. Rapid deforestation, logging and tourist developments destroy world natural resources with all animal and plant species as well as native people and their life hood depend on existence of rainforests. Each piece created by hand in Western Australia inspired by botanical flora of the rainforests (Orchids flowers) and artwork created by contemporary artist Zuhal Kuvan-Mills with application of purple carrots, forest berries, Hibiscus flowers, begonvillas . Non-Violence Vegan Silk/Eri-Peace Silk Fabric ethically sourced by supporting local community in India at Nuapatna village created at handlooms by local artisans. The empty cocoons harvested from adjusting rainforest without harming natural balance and animals.
